HOT WEATHER SAFETY

It's important to protect yourself and others from heat-related illnesses. Extreme heat can be dangerous, especially for children, older adults, and people with health conditions. ​

Know the Warning Signs

Dehydration

-Thirst or dry mouth

-Dark yellow urine or less frequent urination

-Fatigue or dizziness

-Headache

-Muscle Cramps

 

Heat Exhaustion

-Heavy sweating

-Weakness or fainting

-Nausea or vomiting

-Cool, clammy skin

-Fast, weak pulse

 

Heatstroke (MEDICAL EMERGENCY!)

-Hot, red, dry or damp skin

-Confusion or slurred speech

-Loss of consciousness

-Rapid, strong pulse

*If you suspect heatstroke, call 911 immediately and move the person to a cooler place.

Try to lower their body temperature by placing cool cloths or ice packs on the neck or armpits.

 

SAFETY TIPS

-Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly, even if you're not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.

-Dress smart: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

-Limit outdoor activity: Schedule strenuous activity for early morning or late evening.

-Seek shade or A/C: Spend time in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas.

-Cool down: Take cool showers or use a damp cloth on your skin.

-Check on others: Look out for children, elderly, and don't forget your pets as well!
