HEART ATTACK
CARDIAC ARREST

Heart-related emergencies can strike anyone, anytime. Knowing the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, and how to respond can make all the difference.

HEART ATTACK

A heart attack happens when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked. The heart usually keeps beating, but the muscle is being damaged - and immediate medical help is critical.

Warning Signs

-Chest discomfort: pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back

-Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, arms, or shoulders

-Shortness of breath

-Nausea, vomiting, or lightheadedness

-Cold sweat

-Sense of anxiety

What To Do

-Call 911 immediately - Don't wait!

-Have the person sit and try to stay calm.

-If prescribed, help them take aspirin (unless allergic or told not to by a doctor).

-Loosen tight clothing and stay with them until help arrives.

-If the person becomes unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR.

CARDIAC ARREST

Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops beating. Blood flow to the brain and organs stops - and the person will collapse, lose consciousness, and stop breathing. This is a medical emergency requiring CPR and defibrillation (AED) immediately.

Warning Signs

-Sudden collapse

-No pulse or normal breathing

Unresponsive to touch or sound

What To Do

-Call 911 immediately.

Start CPR: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest (about 100-120 times per minute).

*Think of the beat of the song "Stayin' Alive"

-Use an AED (If available)

*Turn it on and follow the voice instructions.

*Continue CPR until emergency responders arrive
