BASIC FIRST AID

Accidents and medical emergencies can happen anytime - at home, at work, or out in the community. Knowing basic first aid can make a real difference while waiting for professional help. 

First Aid Essentials

-Adhesive bandages (various sizes)

-Sterile gauze pads and tape

-Antiseptic wipes or solution

-Disposable gloves

-Tweezers or scissors

-Instant cold pack

-Elastic bandages

-Pain reliver (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)

-Antibiotic ointment

-CPR face shield

Bleeding

-Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or bandage to stop bleeding. 

-If possible, elevate the injured area above heart level. 

-Do not remove soaked bandages - add more on top if needed. 

- If bleeding is severe or does not stop, call 911 immediately. â€‹

Burns

    Minor

-Cool the area with cool (not cold) running water for 10-20 minutes.

-Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing. 

-Do not apply ice, butter, or ointments. 

    Major

-Call 911.

-Cover with a loose, sterile cloth or sheet. 

-Do not remove clothing stuck to the burn.

Choking

-Ask "Are you choking?"

-If the person cannot speak, cough, or breathe give abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver):

     Adults/Children: Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist, and thrust inward and upward until the hazard is dislodged or they can cough it out on their own. 

     Infants: Give 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts alternately.

-If the person becomes unresponsive, call 911 and start CPR.

Sprains or Strains

Use the R.I.C.E method

R-Rest the injured area.

I-Ice for 15-20 minutes every hour.

C-Compress gently with an elastic bandage. 

E-Elevate above heart level if possible. If there's pain, swelling, or deformity, seek medical care. â€‹
