In a medical emergency, every second counts. That’s why the Winona Fire Department plays a critical role in supporting emergency medical response through CPR training and close collaboration with Winona EMS. The two departments came together on Monday, February 2nd to make help make that happen.
Winona firemen are trained in CPR so they can immediately begin lifesaving care when they arrive on scene, often before an ambulance is able to reach the patient. Whether responding to a cardiac arrest, a breathing emergency, or another life-threatening situation, early CPR can make the difference between life and death. By starting care right away, Winona firemen help stabilize patients and give them the best possible chance until advanced medical care arrives.

In addition to providing immediate care, Winona firemen are also able to step in as ambulance drivers for Winona EMS when an extra set of hands is needed. Rural emergency services often face challenges such as long transport times, limited staffing, and multiple simultaneous calls. Having trained fire personnel who can assist EMS ensures that patient care continues smoothly and efficiently, even in demanding situations.
When firemen serve as drivers, EMS providers are able to focus fully on patient care in the back of the ambulance. This teamwork allows for faster, safer transport and better outcomes for those in need. It’s a true example of agencies working together with one shared goal: protecting the health and safety of Winona and surrounding communities.
The partnership between the Winona Fire Department and Winona EMS reflects a deep commitment to preparedness, collaboration, and service. CPR training equips firemen with the skills they need to act confidently in emergencies, while cross-support roles help ensure that no call goes unanswered and no patient is without care.
Winona is fortunate to have first responders who are willing to go above and beyond in training, supporting one another, and stepping into whatever role is needed when emergencies arise. Their dedication helps ensure that when our neighbors need help the most, trained professionals are there, ready to act.
