What To Do While Waiting For An Ambulance
When a medical emergency happens, those first few minutes can feel overwhelming. Whether someone is experiencing chest pain, having difficulty breathing, or has been seriously injured, waiting for an ambulance can feel like an eternity.
In rural communities like Logan County, where emergency responders may need to travel longer distances, knowing what to do while help is on the way can make a difference.
Call 911 immediately. Calling for help early is important. Don't delay calling just because you're unsure if the situation is serious.
Stay calm and follow the dispatcher's instructions. Dispatchers can provide lifesaving guidance, including CPR instructions, before responders arrive. Thewy will also be able to relay important information to first responders.
Make the location easy to find. Turn on outside lights and have someone meet responders if possible. Rural addresses, farm locations, long driveways, and poor visibility can make finding patients challenging so having addresses easily readable from the road can save precious time.
Know the patient's medical information. Gather medications, allergies, medical conditions, and relevant medical history if readily available. Magnetic red folders are available at the Logan County EMS building or have an easy to find folder with all necessary, updated information as well as a copy of insurance cards and drivers license ready for first responders.
Don't move someone unnecessarily. Unless they are in immediate danger, moving an injured person can sometimes make an injury worse.
Be prepared to provide lifesaving care. If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, follow the dispatcher's CPR instructions and use an AED if available.
Keep the area clear. Secure pets, unlock doors if safe, and give EMS personnel enough room to bring in equipment and safely care for the patient.
Emergencies are unpredictable, but being prepared doesn't have to be complicated. Knowing you address, recognizing when to call 911, and following the dispatcher's instructions can help emergency responders provide care as quickly and safely as possible.
